Color holds many secrets. Although black is considered the most mysterious color, strong, contrasting and saturated colors can also evoke considerable interest. Colorblocking, which reigns in this year's trends, is a way to break monotony, a proper energy boost and an idea for creating a style that everyone will want to photograph.

What is colorblocking? As the name suggests, it is the clash of two colors that form two separate blocks. The rule is simple: the stronger and more expressive the color, the more impressive the combination of colors. In this trend, subdued and earthy palettes should be left deep in the wardrobe, as juicy yellow, neon orange, ultraviolet, cobalt blue, venomous green and bloody red take the center stage.

These six colors are the basis not only of color theory, but also of styling theory, which stole the hearts of all stylists and major fashion enthusiasts this season.

Color combining? It's not that hard!

Where lies the secret of colorblocking? It is based on color theory, where complementary colors play a big role. These are pairs of colors that lie opposite each other on the color wheel. So it is yellow with violet, red with green, and blue with orange. These color combinations provide the most contrasting effect for your eyes, hence their pairing gives such electrifying effects.

Before such contrasting combinations warmly welcomed fashion, they gained considerable popularity in the works of artists such as Piet Mondrian and Rothko. Mondrian's paintings went down in history as those that inspired designers to use colorblocking in their collections. Yves Saint Laurent was one of the first to do this, dedicating several famous projects to Mondrian, including a series of "Mondrian dresses".

Complementary colors can electrify

Complementary colors in fashion have been present for several years and for several seasons they have made a big return on the most important world catwalks. This season, when neon colors occupy a large place in the color palette, colorblocking is a trend that simply cannot be ignored.

However, combining contrasting colors is a conventional rule. Many designers and stylists, who are responsible for eye-catching looks in the most important fashion editorials, know very well that combining any two, three, or four strong colors produces a stunning and hypnotic result.

Therefore, combining colors this season is based on personal taste and feeling of color. If you want to combine a strong purple with red, don't worry that they are quite close on the color wheel. Their combination will give an equally interesting and expressive effect as combining complementary colors. Make sure your wardrobe contains such clothes as a canary jacket, a red dress or green sweatpants, and match them with other, also colorful elements of the outfit.

Colorblocking in Scandinavian style

Colorblocking in various forms has appeared in recent collections of many leading designers. These include, among others, Tom Ford, Carolina Herrera, Prabal Gurung and the Scandinavian brand Brogger. Scandinavia is actually one of the best current examples of how a strong color can effectively attract attention, as well as the number of likes on social media profiles. Famous bloggers and fashion fans, who live or come from Scandinavia, present on their Instagrams a review of the most unusual contrasting color combinations, and as you can see, it is very liked by the recipients.

Northern Europe, just like the rest of the fashion world, is betting on a strong color in a double, triple, and sometimes even quadruple version!
